The Financial Year-End & Study Week
If it has been quiet here recently, it is because I have been buried in the trenches of the financial year-end.
For those outside the retail sector, our rhythm is unique. The last Saturday of January isn’t just a date; it’s the finish line for the John Lewis and Waitrose trading year. But for those of us in finance, it just signals the start of an intense two-week sprint of final reconciliations.
This was the culmination of a busy run that started back in November, but this year was a particular learning curve for me.
The “Twice-a-Year” Challenge
I am relatively new to the Technician role. While I’m comfortable with our monthly routine, the year-end brings a different beast: specific balance sheet reconciliations that we only touch twice a year.
Because these processes are so rare, I haven’t built up the “muscle memory” for them yet. I won’t lie—I lost some serious time on a few of these. There is a specific kind of sinking feeling you get when you realize something didn’t go well, and the only solution is to scrap the work and start fresh.
That is where the team really stepped up. My colleagues were incredible—answering my questions, pointing me in the right direction when I hit a wall.
Now that I have been through the fire, I’m hoping the next few months will feel easier. And when the half-year reconciliations roll around in six months, I’ll be ready for them.
Shifting Gears: AI Study Week
The books are closed, and I have finally cleared my schedule for a dedicated Study Week.
I am pivoting sharply from financial data back to my Artificial Intelligence Apprenticeship. I missed some private arrangements last week, and my running shoes gathered a bit of dust, so this week is about catching up and regaining my balance.
I am starting today by reviewing Modules 1 through 5. To make this efficient, I am using a tool I’ve been itching to try at work: Notebook LM. I am feeding my previous project data and notes into the model to help me review the early material. It is a perfect way to test the tool while refreshing my memory on the core concepts I covered months ago.
What’s Next?
I intend to post summaries of these modules here as I review them. You can expect the first updates—covering Modules 1 and 2—to go live later today. These will cover what I learned, the projects I delivered, and how I am using AI to streamline my revision. I will create some audio previews to take with when I go cycling during my lunch break.
It feels good to be back.
